“HAWAIIAN MONGOOSE” HOPES TO REACH HAWAII “FIVE O”

J. Monte

They say love matches are made in heaven, and fight matches are made by one’s manager, and boxer Eileen Olszewski may have both, married to her trainer/husband, and inking a three year contract with her longtime manager David Selwyn. Olszewski hopes to reach the big “Hawaii 50”, eclipsing the mark of the "Old Mongoose," Archie Moore, (who actually fought till age 47) but I would not dare to ask a woman her age.

Born Eileen Miyoko Kuwaye in Honolulu Hawaii in 1968, Olszewski went into boxing after years of ballet, a stint as a New York Knicks dancer and studying the martial arts, then at age 32 teaming up with trainer and future husband Matthew Olszewski, winning three national Golden Gloves and three NYC Golden Gloves before turning professional in 2006.

The team was completed when Selwyn agreed to take over her career. “I saw her first fight and was impressed” says Selwyn, who had never managed a fighter at the time. Since then Selwyn has managed eight fighters but remains with his first, a bond that has never been broken.

“David has been the best thing that has happened to us,” says Matthew, adding that with a good manager, the stress of being a boxer is limited to just the battle that lies ahead, not the finances and worries that can stress a boxer out. I asked her why her longtime bond with her manager is intact and she replied with one word -- “honesty.” It’s a key to any relationship and it has kept the team together for almost a decade now – and still grows stronger to this day.

Matthew describes boxing as “an exact science” meaning everyone plays their part. “I train and prepare her according to what Dave gives us as an opportunity, and Dave has given us great opportunities” said Matthew “whether it is a four or six rounder or a major international title bout.”

History/Culture/Longevity

Eileen, along with contemporary Alicea Ashley are the veterans of a woman’s fight culture that has been around, should I say, almost as long as they have. Don’t call them the deans of female boxing, since both are still active and very well seeing the ongoing evolutionary step of the female gender, its fistic footprint engineered to another level from the early days of Jackie Tonawanda and Cathy “Cat” Davis, and Eileen still has a burning desire to box competitively in her mid -forties. She can fool you, like she did skeptics, into believing she is in her early thirties. Then again, the bond and team created have kept the pilot light lit after all these years.

Three time world champion.

During most of her career, she has been a flyweight champion -- WIBA champion 2008-2011, GBU champion 2010-2013, and since last September, she is the reigning IFBA champion, in fact, she became the oldest flyweight champion ever, male or female, in the history of boxing.

"When it comes to details and contracts, David is a savant” added Eileen, "that what makes him a good manager - good for me at least, but not for the promoter trying to get over, especially overseas."

Hoping to stay in the gym and box till the great "Hawaii 50" this ageless champ is still competing, and winning, at an elite level. At this time she is scheduled to fight an eight-rounder on Ronson Frank's Uprising Promotions on Sept 6th.

Although Eileen has been fighting on the local circuit, this doesn’t rule out a challenge overseas. Selwyn still hopes to get a bout in Europe, places they have fought before.

Despite having a modest 9-5-2 record, a closer look at the record of Manager and fighter and what they have accomplished --two PPV events and two Main Events in Italy, also a co-feature on a Felix Sturm bout held in Germany. In 2008, Eileen fought four world champion fighters with combined record of 52-4 -- and gained a championship belt in the process. The “Old Mongoose” Archie may be gone, but his spirit must be with the “Hawaiian Mongoose” - still is going strong in 2014.

ATLANTIC CITY, NEW JERSEY (August 17, 2013) - Tonight on HBO Boxing After Dark, Gary Shaw Productions in association with Grange Old School Boxing,Matchroom Sport, Thompson Boxing and Sampson Boxing, presented an exhilarating night of boxing live from the Revel Hotel-Casino in Atlantic City.

In the 10-round main event, the UK's Darren Barker (26-1, 16 KOs) defeated Australia's Daniel Geale (29-1, 15 KOs) by means of a twelve round split decision to capture the IBF middleweight championship. Both fighters had their moments throughout the fight.  Barker seemed to be more accurate with his punches.  Geale was in every round and dropped Barker in round six with a left to the body that almost had the British fighter down for good.  Barker showed tremendous resilience and fought hard to end the round.  Going into the later rounds it was anyone's fight. Barker was throwing more punches, but Geale was landing the harder blows.  After the final bell rang the scorecards read 114-113 for Geale, as the other two judge had it 116-111 and 114-113 for Barker.  Barker wins by spit decision.

"I started loading up and got carless and I started getting hit too much," said Barker. "The occasion kind of got to me.  If I would had stuck to my game plan and boxed more, I would have won easier. During the knockdown it all went through my head...my wife my family and my daughter.  I knew I was up against it going in.  He was a tough man."

"I felt I won the fight, said Geale. "I was never hurt.  It wasn't my best performance and I'm very disappointed I lost the belt. I definitely want a rematch."

In the 12-round co-main event, Kiko Martinez (28-4, 20 KOs) captured the IBF Jr. Featherweight with a six round TKO victory over, Jhonatan Romero (23-0, 12 KOs).  Martinez took the fight to Romero applying a tremendous amount of presser from the opening round.  Romero made somewhat of an adjustment in round two and landed some nice counter punches, but Martinez was the one landed the harder blows.  Martinez's pressure was too much for Romero as he was getting hit with a massive amount of punches and the referee stopped the bout at the 2:40 mark of round six.

"I felt very strong tonight," said Martinez. "I'm very happy.  Today is a marvelous day and I all I want to do is go home and give my daughter a kiss.  I had to keep the attack going because I knew the referee was eventually was going to stop the fight because I had him hurt."

Undercard Results
_MG_2321-1.JPG
(10-round Featherweight bout) -WBO No. 4 ranked contender, Joel Brunker (26-0, 15 KOs) outworked a game Mike Oliver (25-4, 8 KOs) over ten hard rounds.  It was evident the Brunker's game plan was to go to the body as he was throwing hard shots downstairs the entire fight.  Oliver had his moments counter punching, but his punches didn't seem to slow Brunker down.  A cut from a head butt emerged from the left eye of Brunker in round six, but it had no effect on his punch output.  When it was all said and done, Brunker as victorious by way of unanimous decision.  Scorecards read 78-74 across the board in favor of Brunker.

_MG_2296-1.JPG
(10-round Welterweight bout) - Cuban born Yordenys Ugas (14-1, 7 KOs) dominated John Williams (11-2-1, 5 KOs) over ten rounds.  Ugas applied pressure from the opening round and was relentless throughout the fight, landing hard shots to the body and head.  Williams was backing up the entire fight while is survive mode.  Ugas landed a hard left hook that wobbled Williams in the later rounds.  A point was deducted from Ugas in the final round.  Scorecards read 98-91 twice, and 99-90 all in favor of Ugas.  With the win, Ugas becomes the WBC Latin Junior Interim Champion.

_MG_2163-1.JPG
(10-round Welterweight bout) - Puerto Rican standout, Thomas Dulorme (19-1, 14 KOs) marched forward in his career with an eighth round TKO over Frankie Figueroa (20-5-1, 15 KOs).  Dulorme came out strong throwing hard body shots and hooks.  A right hand to the head dropped Figueroa in round three.  Figueroa rebounded quickly, but wasn't thrown many punches as he was in retreat mode.  Figueroa's punches didn't seem to have any effect on Dulorme as he continued to stalk Figueroa throughout the bout.  Figueroa hit the canvas again in round five, but Dulorme was deducted a point for hitting below the waist.  Dulorme continued to apply pressure and eventually stopped Figueroa with a barrage of punches in round eight.  The referee halted the bout at the 47 mark of round 8.

_MG_1852-1.JPG
(10-round Lightweight bout) - Peruvian born Jonathan Maicelo (20-1, 12 KOs) started off slow, but came on strong to score a tenth round knockout over an elusiveJose Alejandro Rodriguez (19-12, 11 KOs).  Both fighters were doing their best to land hard shots, but had limited success.  Maicelo was landing the cleaner blows throughout the fight.  It was twenty two seconds into round ten when Maicelo landed a powerful right hook to the head of Rodriguez in which he didn't get up.

DANIEL GEALE THRILLED TO BE FIGHTING ON U.S. SOIL

GARY SHAW PRODUCTIONS

daniel-geale-1NEW JERSEY (July 31, 2013) Ever since Daniel Geale(29-1, 15 KOs) pulled off the unthinkable by defeating Felix Sturm on Sturm's home turf of Germany in September of last year, Geale has essentially cemented himself as one of the elite 160 pounders in boxing.  With the prestige and pageantry associated with such esteem comes the responsibility of self-improvement, a trait that often associates itself with the kind of high caliber athlete with an obsession for competition.   It wasn't enough for Geale to take a bite out of the world stage nor was it completely satisfying when he became the No. 1 fighter in his home country of Australia.

That is why Geale is thrilled to have his next fight scheduled on U.S. soil.  Immediately following his victory over Strum, Geale made it apparent that he had all intentions to make a name for himself in America, but had unfinished business in Australia with Anthony Mundine, in which he scored a unanimous decision victory.  He is still adamant about growing his brand in America.

This American campaign begins August 17th when Geale defends his middleweight crown for the 5th time against England's Darren Barker (25-1, 16 KOs) at the Revel Casino-Hotel in Atlantic City, NJ.  The middleweight clash will air live on HBO's Boxing After Dark and will act as the main event for a scheduled split-site tripleheader, which features Jhonatan Romero vs. Kiko Martinez for the IBF Junior Featherweight title and Nathan Cleverly vs. Sergey Kovalev for the WBO light heavyweight title.

"I'm extremely excited to be making my U.S. debut.   I think it's the next logical step for me right now.  I know how talented I am and I know how great I can be but sometimes winning fights isn't enough.  You have to be prepared to go the extra mile.  Fighting in the U.S. has been on my radar for the past year or two, and now I get to fight in front of the great U.S. fans on the greatest boxing network in the United States against a truly worthy opponent," Geale said.

This seems like the perfect moment to come over to the States with so many great middleweights fighting Stateside, but in order to continue up the ranks Geale is going to have to get past a tough competitor in Barker. The style matchup suggests that U.S. fans are in for an incredible night of boxing and Geale prefers the kind of fight that will get the attention of the market he's venturing into.

"This is a great opportunity for me because I can show a new group of fight fans my talents and the fight will almost definitely produce the kind of fireworks that will have every fan clambering to have me back," Geale continued. "I can gain a lot of credibility with this one fight.  Barker is that kind of fighter."

It would appear as though Gary Shaw waited for the perfect opportunity to get Geale a fight in the US and this is it. Geale realizes that he had to be careful deciding what fight would work best and he knows how fortunate he is to have Shaw on his side.

"I'm so grateful that Grange old school boxing decided to start working with Gary Shaw as my international promoter.  Gary  is doing such a tremendous job for me.  I don't think there are many people that could've done a better job at finding the right opportunity for me and Gary did it with so much confidence.  He always seemed sure and I can see that he knew what he was doing from the very beginning.  He did his job about to perfection, but come August 17th it's my turn," Geale said.

Shaw seems to share Geale's sentiments and believes that he can be the very best in the world.

"I have to first thank Garrie Francisco and Bill Treacy of Grange Old School Boxing for allowing me the opportunity to work with Daniel Geale," said Shaw. "Together we are working as a team to get Geale the best opportunities in boxing.  They have done a great job of getting Geale ready for the world stage and I'm very thrilled to be working with such great people.

Its refreshing working with other promoters like Grange Old School boxing and guys like Daniel because he is a no-nonsense kind of fighter and he isn't afraid to take on anybody.  This is a tough sport and it is always a true test of character when you step into the ring, but even if you aren't genuine you can still talk the talk and fool people for years.  Daniel is a different breed of fighter.

Tickets prices start at $30 and are on sale now at all Ticketmaster locations, online at Ticketmaster.com and by calling 1-800-745-3000.  The HBO Boxing After Dark telecast will begin at 9:45 p.m. ET/PT.

DANIEL GEALE & ANTHONY MUNDINE BATTLE IN HIGHLY ANTICIPATED REMATCH

GEALE'S IBF MIDDLEWEIGHT TITLE ON THE LINE

October 16, 2012 - Gary Shaw Productions has been granted an "Exception to Regulations" by the IBF on behalf of unified IBF/WBA middleweight champion, Daniel "Real Deal" Geale (28-1, 15 KOs), to participate in an optional IBF world title fight against Anthony Mundine (44-4, 26 KOs) prior to his mandatory defense.

"Now that we got the green light from the IBF to make this fight, I'm going to work hard to get everything completed," said promoter Gary Shaw. "This might be the biggest fight in Australian boxing history as both fighters consider this a grudge match."

Geale tasted defeat for the first and only time when these two fighters faced each other back in May of 2009.  Geale lost a controversialsplit decision and he's looking to set the record straight once and for all.

"When Mundine and I first fought, I thought my hands were going to be raised after the fight," said Daniel Geale. "It was close but I thought I was the better man that night.  I've always wanted revenge against Anthony, and now  I have the opportunity thanks to my promotional teams Grange Old School Boxing and Gary Shaw Productions."

"Bill Treacy and Garrie Francisco have done an outstanding job of leading my team to where I am today, and the addition of international promoter Gary Shaw, was brilliant as you can see by my two wins in Germany.  Team Geale defines the word team."

Geale's managers comment on this highly anticipated rematch.

"Anthony should go in to hiding, Daniel will embarrass him" said co-manager Garrie Francisco.

"It's time for Daniel to put an end to the circus" stated Bill Treacy.

Mundine is a three time world champion and has gone (19-1) in his last twenty bouts and is currently riding a 4-fight winning streak. He captured the vacant WBA World super middleweight title against Sam Soliman in March of 2007 when he knocked him out in the 9th round.  A year later, Mundine was victorious in the rematch winning a 12-round unanimous decision in May of 2008.  Mundine is the only fighter in the history of boxing to have every fight on pay-per-view.

"This is a fight that all of Australia has wanted to see and I'm glad it has finally come together."  Mundine said. "I always said Daniel would be a world champion if he didn't have to fight me and that has proven to be the case.  People are saying he is the best middleweight in the world, but he is not even the best middleweight in Australia.  I beat him once and I'll do it again."

Daniel Geale is unbeaten in his last seven bouts and is coming off an incredible triumph victory over, Felix Sturm (37-3-2, 16 KOs), a fight that took place in Sturm's native land of Germany. This was the second time Geale defeated a German fighter on their home soil, having previously dethronedSebastian Sylvester in May of 2011.

Geale's trainer, Graham Shaw of Grange Old School Boxing, is confident that Daniel will be successful in their rematch with Mundine.

"Daniel is fighting at an incredible level these days.  We never look past the next fight and for this bout we will be extremely focused.  In the first fight with Mundine our preparation was solid and I thought we won." said Graham Shaw.  "Since that decision went against us we have moved on and successfully campaigned against the best fighters in the business and I expect Daniel to win the rematch as he has improved 200% and Anthony has not.  Daniel now has two world titles and we will not leave this fight in the hands of the judges."

Mundine is trained by his father, Tony, and he believes his son is prime and ready to take on Geale.

"Anthony has been working away at junior middleweight but this is a fight that can't be ignored," Anthony's father and trainer Tony Mundine said. "He loves the big fights and I know that when the bell rings for round one, my boy will be ready to go."

Both fighters hail from Australia and this long awaited rematch is sure to draw a huge attendance, as the last fight was staged at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre in Boondall, Queensland, Australia, and drew over 10,000 fans.

The bout between both indigenous Australian fighters, Geale and Mundine, will be available on Pay Per View.  Gary Shaw will be having discussions with Anthony Mundine and Team Geale as to the official host site of this event.

A formal press conference featuring both fighters will be held in Sydney, Australia, on Thursday, October 18 AEDT.  Both fighters will be available for interview and photo opportunities.  Details of this press conference will be announced in the coming days.

This event will be a promotion between by Grange Old School BoxingGary Shaw Productions and Black Venom Promotions.

Australia's Unified Middleweight Champion Daniel Geale and Top Contender Joel Brunker to be Present at Chavez Jr. vs. Martinez Showdown in Las Vegas

AUSSIES INVADE LAS VEGAS

September 11, 2012 - Gary Shaw Productions newly crowded unified WBA and IBF middleweight champion, Daniel "Real Deal" Geale (29-1, 15 KOs), is scheduled to arrive in Las Vegas this week to be ringside at the September 15, 2012, Julio Chavez Jr. (46-0-1, 32 KOs) vs. Sergio Martinez (48-2-2, 28 KOs) showdown, taking place at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Geale, coming off his most impressive victory where he dethroned Germany's Felix Sturm (37-3-2, 16 KOs), is interested to see who comes out victorious between Chavez Jr. and Martinez, as a possible fight with the winner could be next for him.

"The winner of Chavez Jr. and Martinez could be my next opponent," said Daniel Geale. "I'm willing to fight the best out there and my promoter Gary Shaw is ready to make it happen.  It's an interesting fight and the winner puts himself in a great position to challenge me.  I never shy away from a great test and I'll be ready to go when Gary Shaw tells me who my next opponent will be."

Geale's fellow countryman, undefeated featherweight contender Joel Brunker (23-0, 13 KOs), who scheduled to make his U.S. debut on October 27, 2012, will join him while they both attend fight week activities.

"I'm excited to be traveling to the United States and be present for Chavez Jr. vs. Martinez," stated Brunker. "I'll remain in the States and start my training camp in preparation for my fight scheduled for October 27th.  Daniel Geale and I both want to show the United States audience what we are made of."

"I'm extremely excited to be promoting the best fighters out of Australia," Shaw said. "Grange Old School Gym has been fantastic working with me and Daniel Geale, and it's been a pleasure working with Angelo DiCarlo with Joel Brunker.  The future looks bright for my company being that we have a great working relationship with all the top talent from the land down under."

GARY SHAW REFLECTS ON DANIEL GEALE AND HIS INCREDIBLE VICTORY OVER STURM

September 5, 2012 - After arriving in the states from Germany this week, promoter Gary Shaw reflects on the incredible week he had with Daniel "Real Deal" Geale and his team as the days led up to their big win against Felix Sturm.  Already the IBF Champion, Geale added Sturm's WBA title, becoming the first Australian born fighter to become a unified world champion.

"Sturm literally thought Daniel's name was "Meal Deal" and found out the hard way that he's the "Real Deal,'' Shaw said. "Sturm, who acted as his own promoter for this event, must have been occupied with the stresses of being a promoter to think Daniels name was 'Meal Deal.'  On the other hand, Team Geale was very relaxed going into this fight.  Just hours before the fight, we were all hanging out in the dressing room joking around, and laughing to the point we had tears in our eyes.  I've never been in a fight where the atmosphere was so calm.  There was no yelling, just very relaxed."

"Geale ended sparring 10 days before the fight and was on weight the entire time.  There was no struggle to make weight and the game plan Graham Shaw put in place was incredible.  Graham is a very underrated trainer.  I nominate him for  "Trainer of the Year" and he needs to be recognized as one of the best trainers in boxing.

"I realized that Daniel didn't have people around him that were dead weight.  His brother Joe was a pleasure to be around and he provided an uplifting spirit.  When you have people that really love you, around you for the biggest fight of your life, then good things are going to happen.

"Being around Team Geale leading up to this fight was one of the best experiences I've had as a promoter.  Together we are willing and ready to take on the toughest challenges out there.  I plan to have Daniel sitting ringside for the Martinez vs. Chavez Jr. fight in Las Vegas and then sit down with HBO to discuss all the options in the newly electrically charged middleweight division, where Geale is the only fighter holding multiple belts. There are many great fights that can be made and we'll make the announcement on who'll we'll fight next in the near future."
